On Display in the Library: Race and Gender in Baseball

Part of baseball's history is the legacy of discrimination in the sport. In the 19th century, the first color line was created, barring black men from playing with white men. Black athletes went on to form their own leagues until Jackie Robinson broke that color barrier in 1947. In the early 20th century, women were banned from playing professional baseball with men.
