Interlibrary Services (ILS)
Formerly Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

What is the process?

  • Complete the First Time Users Registration.
  • Logon to the ILS system (click on “My Library Record” from any library web page) and use the ILS forms.
  • Use the barcode number from your campus ID and your Library PIN. Forgot your Library PIN? Contact ILS at 707-664-2866.
  • When sending an ILS Request, you agree to these copyright restrictions.
  • Requests that cannot be filled will be returned to you with an explanation.
  • View the status of your current and past requests while logged into your ILS account by clicking on the “View/Modify Outstanding Request” button.

Who may use SSU’s Interlibrary Services?

  • Current SSU students, current and emeritus faculty and staff.
  • Faculty and students from other CSU campuses must obtain ILS privileges through their home institutions.
  • Community users should check with their local public library.

What can be requested?

  • Books and copies of journal articles not owned by SSU.
  • Materials not usually available through Interlibrary Services include: material owned in any format by the SSU Library; whole issues/volumes of journals; films, DVDs, videos, Cds, etc.; maps; software and CD-ROMs; rare, fragile, and special collection books; genealogy materials; reference books; and some dissertations.

What is the first step?

  • Check Snoopy for your book or periodical title before completing an ILS request! Items owned by the Sonoma State University Library, unless declared lost or missing, cannot be borrowed through ILS.
  • For book requests, consider using LINK+. Books owned by SSU but loaned out to another patron may be requested through LINK+, but not through ILS.
  • Electronic journals provide access to many full-text journal articles. Ask at the Reference Desk (2d floor) if you need assistance locating, printing or downloading these articles.

How much does it cost?

  • There is a photocopy fee of ten cents per page for journal articles, to be paid at the time of pick-up at the Circulation Desk.
  • Most book loans are free of charge, but exceptional add-on costs, set by the lending library, will be passed on to the user. You will be asked to approve additional charges before we proceed.
  • You are liable for lost, damaged or overdue material. The lending library will determine the costs, fines and processing fees. Failure to comply with these procedures may result in university services and library privileges being withheld.

When and where are items delivered & returned?

  • Allow at least two weeks from the date of your request, but average delivery time is 7 to 10 days.
  • An email will be sent to your official SSU email address when materials are available for pick up at the Circulation Desk (2d floor).
  • During periods of peak demand, priority will be given to assignment-related student requests.
  • Return books at the Circulation Desk, the ILS office, or any book drop. Do not remove the book identifier band. Observe due dates to avoid fines.

How long is the checkout/loan period, and can items be renewed?

  • Book loan periods are usually 3-4 weeks and are noted on the book band.
  • Renew items online through your ILS account by clicking on “View/Renew Checked Out Items.”
  • Renewal requests must be made before the due date noted on the book band.
  • Renewal is at the discretion of the lending library, for a maximum of two weeks.
  • All books are subject to recall and must be returned immediately when a recall notice is issued.

Note:

  • LINK+ renewals are done through My Library Record in Snoopy.
  • LINK+ loan rules and fines, noted in the LINK+ FAQ, vary significantly from regular ILS rules.

Tips

  • A complete and accurate request can be processed without delay.
  • Include the source of your information, i.e., which database you used to find the citation. Our staff can advise you on ways to verify your citation.
  • Include any additional information in the "special instructions" section, e.g., “this journal is supposed to be in the SSU collection, but a library staff member verified that it is missing.”
  • When using a public computer, be sure to quit the Web browser before you leave so that personal information cannot be accessed via the Back button.
  • The ILS system does use cookies. You may refuse these cookies if you wish and still have access to the ILS pages.
