New Works: Celebrating Sonoma State Scholarship and Creativity
From climate governance and contemporary politics to Maya worldviews, Latina narratives, Hindi cinema, and questions about humanity’s place in the universe, Sonoma State faculty are producing scholarship that explores some of the most compelling questions of our time.
On Tuesday, September 22, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, the University Library will bring our community together to celebrate that work at New Works: A Celebration of Sonoma State Scholarship and Creativity, a wine and cheese reception held in the Schulz Information Center.
This inaugural event will honor six Sonoma State faculty members who have published books within the past two years:
- Zeke Baker, Sociology - Governing Climate, How Science and Politics Have Shaped Our Environmental Future
- Ajay Gehlaway, Hutchins School of Liberal Studies - Bollypolitics: Popular Hindi Cinema and Hindutva
- Joshua Glasgow, Criminology and Criminal Justice - The Significance Impulse: On the Unimportance of Our Cosmic Unimportance
- Emily Ray, Political Science - Be Prepared: Doomsday Prepping in the United States
- Silvia Soto, Ethnic Studies and Languages - Caracoleando Among Worlds: Reconstructing Maya Worldviews in the Chiapasv
- Natalia Villanueva-Nieves, Ethnic Studies and Languages - The True Colors of Feeling Brown: Racialized Affect and the Poetics of Space in Latina Narratives
During the reception, each honoree will have a few minutes to introduce their work and share some of the ideas and questions behind their book. The rest of the evening will offer an opportunity to enjoy the refreshments, continue the conversation, and connect with colleagues, students, and members of the local community.
Universities are more than places where knowledge is taught; they are communities where knowledge is continually created, questioned, and shared. New Works is an opportunity to recognize the faculty members doing long-form publication work at Sonoma State and to celebrate the intellectual and creative life of our university.
We hope this first reception will become an annual tradition, giving our community a regular opportunity to celebrate new scholarship.
