Leopold Justi Papers at SSU

Leopold Justi (1864-1946), a longtime resident of Glen Ellen, was a farmer, winemaker, justice of the peace and insurance agent. As a winemaker, he helped develop phylloxera resistant grapevines. As justice of the peace, he was considered the "marrying magistrate", for the many wedding ceremonies he performed. As an insurance agent, he served clients such as Jack London's wife, Charmian, and his step-sister, Eliza Shepard.

The Justi Papers include correspondence, diaries, legal and financial documents, photographs, greeting cards, artifacts, ephemera and miscellaneous periodicals.  View the Library catalog record for a detailed collection description. A student thesis describing the inventory performed on this collection is available for loan.

Access to the collection is by appointment. Please call 707-664-4152 or email specialcollections@sonoma.edu.
